Since many students at the Georgia Debate Institute have expressed an interest in paperless debate, we’ve decided to make available a basic set of instructions to allow you to set up and experiment with the system before the camp begins.
First, download this template. It will be the common template used by the camp. Functions are as follows:
F2 – Header
F4 – Tag/Bold Cite
F5 – Un-underlined Text
F6 – Underlined Text
F7 – Yellow Highlight
F8 – Box
F9 – Un-highlight
Second, follow these instructions to place a copy of the template in Word’s startup folder. (Yes, you will need a copy of Microsoft Word to debate paperless; Open Office and Works do not work with existing Macros)
Third, if you will be using the Whitman system (recommended), check out this instruction manual. It has TONS of useful information and a lot of fixes for known problems.
Fourth, practice “send-to-speech”. This is the most basic and elementary part of paperless. The process of setting it up will also troubleshoot any potential problems with your paperless setup.
To STS:
A) Open a new document and save it on your desktop as “Speech.doc”
B) Open a file that you have produced using the GDI template and click within a page (anywhere, as long as the blinking cursor is in it)
C) Simultaneously hit “control”, “alt”, and the right arrow. Your screen should temporarily flash.
D) Check the Speech document. It should now have the page from Speech within.
